赤柱是香港著名旅遊景點，據說赤柱以前有很多木棉樹，有鮮紅色的花朵，在日出的陽光照耀下，看起來像赤紅色的柱子，因此 稱為「赤柱」，其英文名Stanley 則來自前英國首相史丹利勳爵（Lord Stanley）。
Stanley is a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. The original Chinese name of the village was believed to be based on a big tall cotton tree (Bombax malabaricum, Bombax ceiba) often covered with bright red blossoms at the time, hence red pillar in Hakka language. It was given an English name based on Lord Stanley, 19th-century British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.
